Peter Cleaver was Chairman of the Society for nine years from 1987 until 1996. It was something that he enjoyed and took very seriously, as with everything he did. He brought thirty years of experience on the National Dahlia Council, so he had a lot to offer.
His great passion was exhibition dahlias and whilst Chairman at East Bergholt he raised a fine new variety, which he named Sir Alf Ramsey.
The reason is explained in the press cutting beneath this photo.
The onset of Parkinson's Disease eventually caused the end of his gardening lifestyle and he reluctantly resigned from the committee in 1996.
