Gardening tips for April
With many, April is often one of the favourite gardening months. Longer, milder days encouraging rapid growth, tempting us to spend more time outdoors. Keep hoeing to prevent emerging weeds becoming established. Watch out for Black Spot on rose leaves and treat as necessary. Feed bushes and climbers if you haven’t already done so (feed available at the Store Sundays 9.30 —- 10.30) Twist and pull off any suckers. Remove dead, diseased or damaged shoots from small evergreen shrubs ie flowering heathers and lavender. Lift and divide perennials if not done in the Autumn. Dig in some Fish Blood and Bonemeal (Store) and arrange a framework of staking which will be hidden later on. Continue to sow Summer flowering seeds of you choice. If feasible, dead head daffodils. Let them die down naturally and scatter Fish Blood and Bonemeal to help bulbs store “energy” for next year. Plant out dahlia tubers. Discourage slugs near new shoots of hostas by whichever means suits you. Prune forsythia after flowering and trim and train winter jasmine.
In the veg. plot, sow carrots, beetroot, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, mange tout, courgette - whichever are your favourites. Sow lettuce at 2-3 week intervals. Plant early “chitted” potatoes at the beginning of April and main crop “chitted” at the end of the month. Continue to “battle” moss in lawns and don’t be tempted to mow the grass too short!
SO many jobs, these are but a few for April — enjoy at you own pace. Nearly forgot - BIRDS!
